The years before you turn sixteen are either full of suffering and despair or content and happiness. In those years you are stuck in the faction that you were born in and have to go to school and obey the faction laws that belong to that faction. Abnegation is where you have to do community service, feed the factionless and forbidden to glance at your reflection, erudite is where you sit behind a desk and read books, complete assignments and create new equipment, amity is where you have fun and be happy and harness the crops, candor is where you get to have arguments and debate with your friends and say the first thing that comes to your head and the dauntless is where you get to be wild, untamed and do dare devil stunts. In those first sixteen years you have to do what you’re told and behave like a good child for your parent’s sake. But in that year when you turn sixteen you can change your life.
One day you get to complete an aptitude test that will give you the faction that you were born for but occasionally they can be inconclusive and you just have to select the faction you feel that will fit you best. That is when the choosing ceremony comes in. You can either pick the faction that you got during those aptitude tests but many don’t and remain in the faction they were born in as they are afraid of what could happen to them and their family. But it’s up to you. You get to choose where you’re going to stay for the rest of your life.
But beware because once you choose the faction at the choosing ceremony there is no going back. You have to stick with your decision and complete the initiation for each faction. The candor initiation is based on the virtue of telling the truth and must face lie detector tests daily. Near the end they have to take a truth serum and the leaders and trainers ask a series of questions that are personal embarrassing and if you fail to answer or lie, the initiate fails and will not become a member. Abnegations are required to do 30 days of community services and no initiate ever fails as that would be recognized as a selfish act. Dauntless initiates must pass 3 different stages. The first stage is physical and requires them to do fighting training and complete it. The second stage is testing them emotionally as they go through all their fears and the third is a mental test as they must complete their fear landscape by finding a way to stop that fear. It is also a tradition for dauntless initiates to play capture the flag. It is very competitive and boys and girls are required to live in the same dorms and the lowest ranking people are kicked out. Amity’s initiate process just involves picking fruit, harness food and sing songs which is simple enough to pass. The erudite initiation is basically judged on you IQ and learning abilities. They must complete many assignments and at the end must complete a written exam to determine their IQ. The people who have a low IQ usually become factionless.
If you compete the initiate without any trouble you can become a full fledge member and complete the jobs that are required. If you don’t you get kicked to the curb and must live with the factionless. They are poor and usually aggressive and self-defensive. You both have a happy life in your new factions or a life full of poverty and despair if you live with the factionless. Choose wisely and best of luck.
